Guest Post: My Road to Becoming a Published Author by Jana Begovic, author of Poisonous Whispers

MY ROAD TO BECOMING A PUBLISHED AUTHOR

by Jana Begovic

Ever since I can recall, I've been fascinated with storytelling. As a child, I would spin tales, talk to an imaginary friend, and devour fairy tales. As a teenager I wrote maudlin love poems, and as a young mother, fables for my son. My love of the written word propelled me toward the studies of languages and literature, up to the post-graduate level. Those phases of my life unfolded in ex Yugoslavia, my native land.

When my family and I moved to Canada, my dream that I would one day write a novel followed me into my new life.  But settling into a new cultural environment, and trying to rebuild a career meant indefinite postponement of dream chasing. And as time is a winged creature, years flew by during which I employed my writing skills in producing  trip and other reports, specialized language testing manuals, a scholarly article and minutes taken at international and domestic meetings.

When I finally found the time and inspiration to write a novel, I immersed myself into the process without even thinking of the genre. I gave my imagination free rein, letting it play and meander along the plot and fabular digression lines. The story of love, loss and betrayal I was sculpting with words ebbed and flowed for two full years. Encouraged by the raving comments of my Beta readers and my first editor, I mustered up the courage to start submitting my debut work to agents and publishers.

At the same time, I realized how little I knew about publishing except that authors sold the rights to their books in exchange for royalties from sales. However, I discovered soon that predators lurked among editors trying to ensnare unsuspecting authors into their vanity nets; that rejections were the norm, and that professional editing was a costly but indispensible step if a manuscript was to be presentable; that big publishers lived in ivory towers to which only agents had access, and that these agents themselves lived in similar towers.

Polite and mostly formulaic rejections started arriving soon after I dispatched my first few query letters.  One publisher called and explained I would be considered for publication only if I built a fan base first; the same publisher asked for an R&R, but I abandoned the idea after reading negative reviews about the company.  Another publisher said my story was interesting, the characters well-developed,  but the  books written in the historic present did not sell well.

My last submission went to Roane Publishing and the acquisitions editor immediately requested the full manuscript. A couple of weeks after, when the name Roane popped in my inbox, I felt a wave of impatience wash over me thinking it must be another rejection. To my delight, the email was full of praise for the manuscript; however the editor found the two main characters needed more differentiation as they sounded too similar. I immediately found the observation insightful and perceptive, and set out with both enthusiasm and trepidation to work on revisions.

Several weeks after, I was notified the manuscript was accepted.  Fireworks of happiness went off in my mind. After the contract signing, the editing began and my initial angst that my authorial intent, tone, and the ambiance I created might be changed by the editor was quickly dispelled. The editing process with Lynne Street, and the final consultations with the Roane Publishing owner, Rebecca Hart were fully collaborative, productive, professional and enjoyable. Moreover, in consultation with the editor, the publisher graciously allowed the manuscript to deviate from the usual length and style of a traditional romance. Now, I feel privileged to call myself a Roane author, and hope my debut novel finds its way into the heart of many readers.

New Release: Poisonous Whispers #Fantasy #Romance by Jana Begovic #Giveaway

Happy Book Birthday to

Poisonous Whispers!

Poisonous Whispers
A Fantasy Romance Novel
By Jana Begovic
Publisher: Roane Publishing
Release Date: December 5, 2016
Keywords: Fantasy, Romance, Saga, Reincarnation, Destiny, Betrayal, Past lives, Passion

“Don’t you ever forget about me...,” he whispers during their secret encounters. Like a curse, these simple words now haunt Leandra, a reputable psychiatrist, who finds herself in emotional chaos after the sudden breakup of her illicit affair. Unable to heal on her own and tormented by dreams in which supernatural forces create havoc with her fate, she desperately turns to David, a colleague psychiatrist, asking him to take her through past-life regression therapy. She hopes that this unorthodox and somewhat suspect technique will explain her profound connection to the lover who has abandoned her so abruptly.

The sessions take Leandra through 17th and 19th century Ireland, Italy and England, where love, loss and betrayal are the leitmotifs in an ambiance of co-mingled fantasy and reality. In her hypnotic state, Leandra recounts a saga of intoxicating love, dizzying passion, flaming lust and profound heartbreak. Despite the painful answers she finds under hypnosis, Leandra still cannot let go of the hope to reunite with her lover. Ultimately, the shattering revelations from her past-life incarnations, along with the turmoil over her ruined marriage, become the stepping stones of her introspective path to healing, self-discovery and an appreciation of true love.

With its seamlessly interwoven sub-plots, “Poisonous Whispers” lures the reader from one continent to another, from past to present. The affair at the center of the story is an anatomy of the heart in which the heroine’s sorrow-laced journey reflects the universal themes of love and loss.

EXCERPT:

A tiny streak of pale light is cascading softly down the cell window and making a shy sliver in the veil of darkness. I open my eyes, disoriented. I do not move; I do not even dare blink until I get my bearings. Then I remember and freeze in horror. I sit up, an aching all over my body and cold dread in my heart. Instinctively, I try to disentangle my matted hair with my fingers, but it is hopeless. All around me, I smell mold, decay and death. How can I survive another day in this hole? The sound of the door opening with a screech makes me jump in terror.

The gaoler walks in; a heavy set of keys dangling and jingling in his hand.

“Come. You are being moved in preparation for tonight’s execution. A verdict was reached.”

I speak not but follow him. We climb a steep staircase. Below us, I hear moans and yells and what sounds like the death throes of those hopelessly lost to the world and forgotten by justice, compassion and mercy. Again, I am feeling dissociated from the event of my calamity; I see my body walking, but my soul is not in it and indifference over what might happen floods me. Death is not the end. Death offers me salvation from pain, from the torment of living a human life.

We leave the jailhouse and enter the house across the street to the village inn. The inn owner, James Bourke, looks at me with hatred and disdain. He also always hated my husband because his wife had hoped my husband would marry her. She was in love with him, and when he married me she tried to kill herself. James married her later, but has always known that she never stopped loving my husband.

The gaoler takes me upstairs to one of the guest rooms and locks the door behind me. The room is wide and clean even though sparsely furnished. The bed is large and looks inviting and I realize how exhausted I am. On the bed is a white, thin chemise and I immediately understand this is what I will wear tonight when I am pushed off the bridge into the water that is cool even on the hottest of summer days. Will I have the strength or the will to swim and save myself? What surprises and almost delights me under such grave circumstances is a bathtub in the corner of the room. There is steam rising from it and I immediately undress and slip into it, relieved to be able to wash off the dirt, the grime, and above all the horrible stench on my body. I rub myself raw trying to clean my skin. Washing my hair is more difficult because at home I have servants who help me with bathing, dressing and undressing. I have been spoilt by marrying a man of wealth and power. Where is my husband now? I crave his protection. If he saved me now, would I give up Kieran, would I give up love in order to live? I surmise I would.

Where Dreams Come True
by M. T. DeSantis

Jared Wexler was in front of Cinderella’s castle.
Tia Bedford stopped dead on Main Street USA. The June sun baked her skin, but she couldn’t move. Ten feet away, Jared Wexler posed for a Disney photographer, one arm up in a princely wave. A brilliant smile curved his lips, and Tia’s heart contracted. Three months ago, those lips yelled at her as she yelled back, and then Jared had walked out of her life. It was all her fault.
Jared turned from the photographer and looked straight at Tia. “Tia?” He pushed through the crowd. “Fancy seeing you here. Want to find some air conditioning?”
Tia blinked. Jared wanted to be around her? It made no sense, but she wouldn’t push him away again.
“Sure.” Tia started toward the shops on one side of the street. Inside, her skin heaved a sigh of relief. What possessed her to come to Florida in June? Oh, right, she needed a distraction from the hole Jared left in her life, and Disney was the happiest place on earth.
“Cool stuff, ay?” Jared held out his arm to indicate the wall-to-wall Disney paraphernalia. He grabbed a mug with a picture of Grumpy from a shelf. “’I’m not grumpy, everyone else is too cheerful.’ I like his thinking.”

Despite herself, Tia laughed. Jared’s voice slid over her ears like the softest silk. A whiff of his musky scent caught her nose, and she breathed like a dying woman. Every touch they ever shared pulsed through her. His hands, his lips—how did she survive without him? Not to mention his humor.
She pointed to the mug. “Happy must drive him nuts.”
Jared winked. “I’ll bet.” He replaced the mug, took Tia’s hand, and tugged her across the store to a display of bracelets. He plucked one off the wall and held it up. Pictures of the Disney couples dangled from the chain. “This would look good on you.” He brushed the pads of his fingers over her wrist.
Shivers racked Tia’s body. The ache in her chest grew unbearable. Before she could think, she stood on tip-toe and pressed her lips to Jared’s. Jared wrapped his arms around her, bringing the world into focus. His lips tasted like salt and summer and promises made.
Forever, love, magic—how did one fight ruin it all?
Tia broke away. She couldn’t do this. “I’m sorry.” She spun and darted toward the door.
Tears pricked at her eyes. She told him to get out. She called him so many names. Yes, she regretted it all moments after the fight was over, but it was too late. She destroyed the best thing in her life, and she didn’t deserve him back.
She burst into the blazing afternoon. A crowd flooded Main Street. Couldn’t these people pick somewhere else to walk? Tia rushed toward the castle. If she could get to one of the lands, she could get lost in the people and attractions.
Music blasted the air, and an energetic voice announced a dance party. People surged toward the castle, cheering.
Tia stopped. There was no way through.
Someone gripped her shoulder. “Tia, what’s wrong?” It was Jared.
She ripped free. “Why are you talking to me? You should hate me for what I said.”
“Tia.” Jared turned her head, forcing her to look at him. All around, people partied, but nothing came between them. “You weren’t the only one who said terrible things. We fought. It happens. I’ve spent three months trying to move on.” He clasped the couples bracelet around her wrist. He bought it? “But I can’t. I love you, Tia. You’re the best thing that ever happened to me, and I don’t want to lose you because of one fight.”

Tia’s tears fell. Those were the exact words she’d wanted him to say. The hole in her chest mended. If he could forgive her, she could forgive herself. “I love you, too. I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t apologize.” He cupped her cheek. “We’re together again, and that’s all that matters.” He bent toward her.

Tia’s heart matched the joyful beat of the music. This really was where dreams came true.
