EXCERPT:

With gentle fingers, Marcus tilted her chin up and stared into her eyes. “What do you need, Veronica?”

Her chest heaved, but she twisted away from him, paced down the hallway. She leaned against the wall across from the door to her apartment. “My family’s a mess. I’m a mess.”

He stepped toward her, and his toe collided with the leg of a barstool. He stumbled, and the wooden back gouged into his shoulder.

He sucked in a breath but kept moving forward. Veronica needed him. His breath came in gasps, but he stood inches in front of her.

She sighed, closed her eyes, and leaned her head against the wall.

Marcus stepped closer. “What’s really bothering you?”

Her eyes popped open. The intensity in the green-flecked depths sucker-punched him. “I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready.” Her chest shuddered. “To give you want you want.”

“I’ll wait.” He cupped her flushed cheek in his palm. “You’re worth it.”

“Don’t wait.”

The words barely registered because Veronica stepped into him. Every luscious curve pressed along the front of him. He covered her peachy lips with a hungry kiss.

Their mouths opened, tongues serenaded with languished strokes. A moan vibrated from the conjoined chest. His or hers?

His hands slid up and down her back, plunging into the thick curls at the nape of her neck. Pounding in his ears nearly drowned the voice chiding him for wanting to explore her entire backside. Her soft firmness wreaked havoc on his self-control. He wanted her, and parts of his body screamed the fact.

She shifted her hips, and he pressed into her center. Pleasure shuddered through him.
A little gasp from her lips made his heart stall. She leaned away and temperate air from her apartment cooled his passion a fraction.

“Veronica?” He licked his lips at the sight of her just-kissed mouth. His heart sped like a runaway train.

“I thought—” She stepped back until the wall halted her.

A yowl sent Marcus into a defensive stance. Veronica’s cat wove between her shins, glaring at Marcus with wide green eyes.

“Hey buddy.” Marcus’ voice sounded husky to his ears. Usually, he’d squat down and converse with Major, but he was physically hindered. “Don’t be jealous. You’ll get to sleep with her later.”

Heat flushed through his chest and face. Good Lord. Did I just talk about sleeping with her?
He glanced at Veronica. “Not that I’m hinting that I want to sleep with you.” He ran his fingers through his hair, setting the curls free from their mousse chains. “I mean, I want to sleep with you. Obviously.”

Veronica’s slender fingers pressed against his lips, a sort of resolution darkening the amber flecks in her eyes. “I’m not ready. There’s so much going on with my family, and I hate burdening you with it. You deserve…”

Marcus drew back. His body and soul ached for her, but he didn’t want to do anything to make her relive the trauma of her abuse.

The moon shadows danced across the fabric of their tent. Hours past, and still no sign of Karin. A chess game had begun.
When they heard the snapping twigs warning them of Karin presence outside their tent, neither moved, their nerves frayed from the long hours of waiting.
Lara took the soul-catcher in her hand. “Ready.”
“Protect your thoughts from his manipulation,” Angie said.
“No matter what he does, stay in the circle.”
The tent flap flipped open and Karin stood with Peter. “You requested to see me?” He wrenched Peter’s arm behind his back, and pushed him to the ground. The boy was filthy, his sandy hair matted with dirt.
Her heart ached for the poor child, but she used her skill, and kept the emotional barriers in place. Lara placed the super hero figurine next to her medicine bag, where Peter could see Spider-Man was there to help him.
She turned to Karin and sneered.
In response, Karin yanked Peter by the hair, his toes barely touching the flooring of the tent, and threw the boy in the air. Peter dropped to the ground, hard, with a sickening cracking sound. A bone protruded out of Peters arm.
Lara tried to hide her feelings, but seeing the boy’s mistreatment, hearing his scream of agony, almost broke her resolve.
Peter grabbed at his broken arm, crying, and groaning in pain.
“Help him.” Lara telegraphed to Rafe.
Karin’s monstrous eyes scanned the tent. “Where’s the sidhe? You’re a coward, Keeper of Dreams, a failure. Come, do battle. I need a good fight. I’ll even let you live long enough to see her surrender her soul to me.”
Lara panicked when Rafe opened the flap of the tent, holding the two djinn shifter’s Karin brought with him. “Here’s your gophers.” He dropped the two at Karin’s feet. “Who will defeat who?”
When he disappeared, Lara knew he donned his invisibility whammy. Peter lifted from the ground and whisked out the tent.
Lara nodded understanding. Peter was safe. It was time to finish her task.
Karin thirst for power slammed into Lara’s mind, twisting her every emotion. Her dark side emerging as she succumbed to the assault of painful memories. She felt the blackness around her heart turning to ash, a black rose blooming, taking hold of her heart, squeezing.
She gasps for air, clutching her chest, the pain, excruciating. Her barriers failing her, Karin reached inside twisting her memories, using them to torment-the guilt, the hurt, the hate.
An acrid smell permeated the enclosed tent. The urge to wretch tightened the pit of her stomach. Acid burned the sides of her throat. Every hateful hit and punch from her father coming to mind, her anger growing stronger by the minute, her fear feeding the savage demon.
Lara wanted her own revenge. She’d make her father’s soul pay.
“Invite me in and I’ll make your dreams of revenge a reality. His soul will live in Xibalba, tortured with screams.”
Lilth emitted the purity of light into her mind. “Fight him with your words and your love. Your love of Peter, Sedona, your friends...”
Karin’s hold weakened.
Rafe merged with her energy, and Lara grasped the turquoise cord in her mind’s eye.
“I love you, don’t leave me,” Rafe said.
She felt Rafe’s passion vibrating through her. With Rafe’s help, she reinforced her barriers, preventing Karin from manipulating her emotions.
“They don’t love you. They pity you. The lost little girl no body wants or will ever love. They lie to you.”
A painful lump lodged in her throat. Karin’s hateful words still hurt.
Angie jumped up and unsheathed a knife she hid inside her boots. “You’re the liar.”
Karin’s skin reddened and his brown eyes became black. The daemons power grew as he manipulated Angie’s emotions. He summoned Angie out of the circle and engaged her in combat.
Lara couldn’t leave the safety of the circle, or she’d never be able to capture him inside the catcher. The daemon slammed Angie against the tent wall. The knife fell from her hand and she lay crumbled on the ground.
Rafe rushed in and leaned over Angie. In that moment Karin plunged the knife into Rafe’s shoulder. He jerked back and came face to face with Karin.
 “Their souls will be confined in Xibalba and I promise you, they’ll suffer for an eternity.” Karin hissed. “Come out of that protective circle and save them, if you can.”

~~~oOo~~~
“Where is your hospitality, my friend?!” Victorius asked.
“Why do you not invite us for a cup of coffee?” He laughed and his Varkins sniggered with him.
“Victorius, get to the point,” Maximus retorted. “Tell us what you want!”
“‘...us...?’ ‘Tell us?’ A real leader doesn’t have an ‘us’. A real leader,’ he pounded his own chest. “A real leader has only a ‘me’! You, Maximus, are no real leader.” Victorius paused for a moment and his face lost its false joviality, became grimly serious.
“I am here to take back what belongs to me!” he roared in an increasing crescendo.
“The Core is ours—it was never yours!” Maximus called back as he stepped forward.
Victorius began to laugh. None of the Anlights could understand this reaction as they looked at each other. Victorius finally controlled his hysterical laughing.
“Keep the Core, my friend. I gave it to you!” He laughed again, a chilling, humorless laugh. “That is not what I have come for!” He looked over the Anlights guards standing around Maximus.
Maximus, Dexter and the Anlights finally realized what he meant. It was not ‘what’ Victorius had come for—it was ‘who’.
Annabel’s heart froze for a moment. Then, gathering a new resolve, she stepped from behind Dexter and at a deliberate pace, walked to stand in front of him and Maximus, in the center of the space between the two leaders. As she appeared from the rear ranks, Victorius’ eyes widened, his face became deadly serious.
“There you are, my precious! I could not see you behind this strong young man hiding you,” he admitted, smiling a cold, slit of a smile. “Are you special to him?”
Annabel did not say anything, hoping to hide the truth.
“Your wings are still as black as I remember them before you...” he paused for effect, choosing his words, “...before you escaped.”
Victorius took a single step forward, and Dexter came closer to Annabel and reached for her hand.
“Relax, young man!” Victorius laughed. “If I fight anybody, it will be one equal to me.” He looked at Maximus. “I am not going to waste my time on these...” He looked over the Anlights guards. “...little boys who surround you, Maximus.”
“You are not getting Annabel either, Victorius!” Maximus declared firmly, also stepping forward.
“Well, my friend...” Victorius said. “Let her decide this.” He smiled looking at Annabel. “Maybe somebody else can convince you, my child?” As he said it, he stretched his hand to the crowd behind him and the Varkins divided their ranks, creating a pathway through them. Someone came from their rear, slowly walking between them, and stopped beside Victorius. She took his hand and let him kiss her as she smiled at him. Annabel looked at the woman, trying to understand why Victorius had suggested somebody else could convince her.
Suddenly Annabel’s heart stood still as she whispered. “She’s not a Varkin.”
New Release: In Gray by Sara J. Bernhardt #NALit #PNR #Giveaway
Happy Book Birthday to
In Gray!
In Gray
by Sara J. Bernhardt
Publisher: Roane Publishing
Release Date: July 10, 2017
Keywords: New Adult, Paranormal, Romance, Clairvoyant
After a car accident causes Daisy Carmichael to see the future, she is plagued by not only the things she sees but the deadly secrets of the young man who saved her life.
EXCERPT:
“Please.” I said. “Don’t stop. I remember. When you kiss me, I remember.”
He brought his lips back to mine and a flash of color filled my vision.
I was at the beach, feeling the heat from the sun and seeing the blue horizon in front of me. My yellow hair ruffled around my face and a boy with hazel eyes stood before me with a perfect smile on his face. I felt the heat of his skin when I reached to touch his face.
The vision faded and was replaced with a park bench in a dark evening; the sun barely peeking over the mountains. We were laughing, but there was no sound. Flashes of smiles and exchanges of looks rapidly played in my memory. There were so many empty hours that were filled with the one thing I should have never been able to forget.
Another memory, a laugh, a smile and finally, a kiss; a kiss in the afternoon standing in the tall grass of our field.
When he finally pulled away I had soft tears rolling down my face, but I was unable to keep from smiling.
“Did you see?” he asked.
I nodded. “More than that,” I said. “I remember. The visions…I know I have lived those moments before. They felt perfectly familiar and fitting. I know those memories are mine. I remember.”
#FlashFiction Friday Kona Landing by Shirley Penick #Romance #FFF
Kona Landing
by Shirley Penick
“Oh no, we’re landing in a lava field, is the pilot lost? Are we going to crash?” I whisper to my best friend, Jennifer. She just shrugs. I crane my neck to look around at the rest of the passengers; no one seems upset. Are they paying attention?
The man in the seat behind my friend chuckles, leans forward and says, “It’s okay, we’re not crashing or landing in the volcano. Is this your first time to Kona?”
Whoa, that voice is amazing, deep and rich, with a hint of laughter. I can’t really see him between the seats. “Yes, my first time to both Hawaii and the Big Island.”
“The airport on this side of the island is different than any you’ve probably flown into before. It’ll all be fine. Trust me.”
I don’t know him from a hot rock, but for some reason, I do trust him. The plane touches down in a gentle landing. I still can’t see anything, except black lava rock and the ocean. But the plane is not bouncing over all the bumpy, spiky lava so apparently, there is a runway under us.
When we stop, I grab my rolling bag from the overhead and my tote from under the seat. I extend the rolling bag handle, when that same man taps me on the shoulder. I turn back, his body and face back up the voice. Dark hair, almost black snapping eyes, skin the color of burnt caramel and a smile so big, it’s nearly blinding. I just stare at him stupidly.
“Can you carry both of those, down stairs?”
“What? Stairs? No. What stairs? Why do I need to carry them?”
“This airport has stairs only, from the plane to the tarmac.” He shrugs.
“Seriously?”
“Yes, I’ll help you with your rolling bag.”
We’re moving forward and I get to the door, oh for goodness sake he’s right, no building, no walkway, just stairs. He takes the bag out of my hand, compresses the handle and follows me down the stairs. I’m so damn glad he’s helping. I would kill myself trying to schlep them both, without crashing down the stairs. As it is, I have a death grip on the hand rail, and I take the stairs very slowly. My best friend is nowhere to be seen. She’s probably already out the gate and kissing her fiancé, we’re here for her wedding.
When I get to the bottom, the man steers me to the side a bit, so I’m not blocking traffic I suppose. He sets down my bag, pulls out the handle and gives it to me.
“Thank you so much, I couldn’t have done it by myself.”
“My pleasure, have a great time on our island.” He smiles and I feel weak in the knees, he’s hot! He starts walking and I hurry to catch up to him.
“Do you live here?”
“Yes.”
“My friend is getting married and her fiancé lives here, I’m the maid of honor, Kim.” I’m babbling, but I want a few more minutes with the man.
“Kalani, nice to meet you.”
“Are you Hawaiian?”
“Yes, partially.” He plucks a flower from a tree, glances at my left hand and puts the flower behind my right ear. “Baggage claim is right there. Aloha.” And he’s gone.
* * * *
I leave the pretty lady at baggage claim and jog out to the street, trying not to bust a gut. I jump into Keoni’s ride. “Ho brah.”
“What’s so funny?”
“Oh man, you should see this one chick on the plane. Man she’s freakin’, sure the pilot’s landing us in the volcano and Pele’s going to eat her right up.”
“First Kona landing.”
“For sure, then she’s got one rollin’ carry on, weighs a ton for her little self. Mighty fine little haole girl, but no can carry that bag and a huge tote down stairs.”
“So you carry for her.” It’s not a question.
I shrug, “She no can, I can. Pau.”
“Get her number?”
“No. Here for a wedding, maid of honor, no time for local boys.”
“Hanalei’s pickin’ up his wahine and her maid of honor right now. Might be same.”
“Wedding’s not for two weeks.”
“Yeah, girls are comin’ in early for checking it out. Got a luau tonight to welcome the girls, remember?”
“Naw, guess I forgot, mainland brain, what time? Supposed to bring some kine ting?”
“Nothin’ special, just same ol’.”
“Well now, that might be worth looking into.”
“Got your mainland talk goin’, brah.”
“Whatever it takes, my friend, she was one pretty lady. Blond hair, blue eyes, pretty mouth, and a body I would love to see in a bikini.”
* * * *
A few hours later, Jenn and I are showered and changed into pretty sundresses, I’ve put the flower back in my hair where Kalani put it. Her fiancé has a little welcoming bar-b-q planned for us with some of his friends, who will be in the wedding party. We’ve got two whole weeks in Hawaii and I’m excited to see the place; if I can drag my friend out of the arms of her fiancé long enough to go sightseeing.
The plan is to check all the wedding stuff. But I am beginning to suspect that was a ruse to get out here early, so she can hop in bed with her fiancé, before the big day. We’re staying in a pretty place near the ocean, so even if I don’t get to sight see, I can still enjoy and maybe even get into the water. We walk outside and again the scent hits me, the air smells like flowers and sunlight. I first noticed it as soon as I got far enough away from the tarmac with the jet fuel fumes.
I think about the man from the plane and wish there was some way to bump into him again. But I can’t think of any way to find him, and I’ve found out that half the men on the island are named Kalani, so that won’t help much. It would take a miracle.
Hanalei brings Jennifer and I over a Mai tai. “Here are some drinks for some lovely ladies.”
I accept mine and take a cooling sip of the frothy liquid while Jennifer nearly crawls inside the guy. I’ve never seen her this crazy about a man. I guess that’s why she’s marrying him.
I’m trying to decide if I should make myself scarce when Hanalei looks behind me and smiles. “Aloha brothers. Come meet the girls.”
I turn and nearly drop my drink, the guy from the plane is walking up with a huge smile.
He takes my hand and kisses it. “We’ve already met Hanalei, on the plane.” He turns to me with a soft look that makes me tingle all over. “Welcome to Hawaii, Kim, I hope you will let me be your tour guide while you’re here.”
He puts a lei around my neck and kisses my cheek. I try to get my mind to work, and my knees to keep holding me up. “I would be delighted.”
“Excellent.” He takes the flower from behind my right ear and puts in behind my left one, puts my hand on his arm, and steers me toward the bar-b-q pit.
I hear Jennifer say, “Well, we might be looking at another wedding soon. What is it with you Kona boys?”
